Introduction

The validation module is developed for health care professionals to validate the knowledge, skills and competencies in the domain of narrative medicine and health care pedagogy. The validation module content is structured according to the EU documents (European Qualification Framework – EQF) and the chapters are divided as follows:

The first chapter brings the validation methods generally and deals with methods generally. In the first chapter there is description of the validation methods generally (knowledge, skills and competencies). The competence model prepared by the Heppy project is divided into knowledge, skills and competencies.  The learning outcomes are therefore divided into knowledge, skills and competencies. The various validation methods are presented. Validation of learning outcomes (knowledge, skills and competences) acquired through non-formal and informal learning, including through open educational resources, is essential for nurses' access to the labour- market and to lifelong- learning. There are many different possibilities for structuring and constituting the results of learning processes. Following discussions between technical experts from all countries involved in the development of the EQF it was agreed to use the distinction between knowledge, skills and competence (KSC) as basis of the framework, because it is the most established way for categorising learning outcomes. In the activities of the first chapter an example of knowledge assessment is introduced using the cards. The method is called “BEEP” and helps to identify and evaluate the knowledge acquired. This method can be done in a group and it is important that it is used as evaluation tool and not as a game tool. The second activity is on methods and tips for Preparing Good Multiple Choice Assessment Questions – this activity is taken from the web page and can be used as example for preparation multiple questionnaires. Basic nursing clinical skills checklist is introduced as one of two questionnaires and the second questionnaire is on Social Worker Assessment Tool.

The second chapter is devoted  to validation of knowledge and skills for nurses. Nurse has to be a listener, a manager, and a knowledgeable skilled professional. Some of the key skills the nurses are described. The nurses needs to have excellent people skills, good communication and observation skills which are critical for nursing, they have to have ability to answer questions and offer advice, they will have to have skills in the team work since the nurses are part of a multidisciplinary teams that includes doctors, physiotherapists, anesthetists, pharmacists, dietitians and many more. They need to know how all these different people work together. Nurses also have to be able and have the skills of dealing with emotionally charged situations
Nursing can sometimes involve managing distress. They play a key part in helping patients and families come through their crises. The activities are suggested that help validate the skills and knowledge. In the first activity there are suggested 12 communication situations, which the validated nurses needs to answer and name the communication method. It is activity that helps to validate the subtle empathetic communication that is very important especially with the weakened patients or clients. The second activity is suggested as role play with observation sheet. The participants themselves describe their patients and the colleagues play that client. The observers validate on the observation sheet whether certain skills are used or not.The questionnaire on team work that can be done online is also introduced.

The third chapter is about competence validation. Competence is the combined knowledge, skills, attitudes and judgment required to provide professional nursing services. The competence self-assessment tool (form) is a systematic and organized method to identify your own learning needs. You can then use the data and the exercise to plan a continuing education / professional development program so that you can remain competent in your profession. Skill is a part of competency. Competency consists of three parameters- Knowledge (K), Attitude (A) and Skills(S).

For example: A nurse or a social sister might be having very good interpersonal skills or people skills, but will not be competent to join a institution as company as Professional unless she /he possess adequate education/ experience (Knowledge) and the right temperament/ behavior (attitude). The activities in the third chapter are more complex and both activities are based on the video that is watched and then the activity is done. There is activity about mind mapping that helps to validate documentation of the patients and the second activity is story writing also based on the video on practice of story telling. The video states the basic principles of story telling and based on these stories about their patients are written.
